Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

Memories

This photo reminds us that the future, way out there, is so hard to see, like the light between the pilings/the pillars of the Cayucos pier.

We’ve had a fondness for this date for many many years. We’re sure these feelings began with Carole King’s song “The First Day of August” published on her Rhymes & Reasons album. She sings about the last night of July and waking-up together on the first day of August. I win the bet every year that Mr. Fun will spin that song out of the iPod and play it many more times than once.

This date arrives each year overflowing with good, really good memories.

One of those memories happened six years ago today when we entered a little rundown beach house with our real estate agent. We had been looking at it on the Internet for a couple months previous to our first in person visit.

It was love at first sight, well cautious love, fearful love, excited love at the possibility, the potential. The place was a disaster, a derelict, with the potential of discovering a diamond in all the dust.

Today we realize what we found that day, seventy-two months ago, when we walked through at 11:00 in the morning as the clouds were beginning to roll back, like a bed half-torn open, revealing the blue summer sky.

The memories are delightful. The reality is intoxicating — that we have this location to retire to.

This home is far from perfect, but perfection is so over-rated.

Even though we cannot see it, the future offers so much promise.
