Alun and Julie

Legged it back from Sheffield this morning to attend the service at the top of Garrowby Hill, East Yorkshire. This is always a lovely gathering led by Alun and Julie.
We meet at the memorial site of a training flight that came down in the fog, my parents were amongst the first on the scene, sadly none of the crew survived.
Alun should have been on that flight but was saved by having appendicitis, he now travels from Cardiff every year to lead the service and pay his respects to his fellow crew members.

I was very humbled by one of his recounts of a bombing mission -he was bomber number two- bomber number one was a rather well spoken chap, he requested (rather than instructed) politely that they start their raid at a certain point.
Not far into their tour Alun received a message... " Bomber number one to bomber number two, I've been hit, would you take over please"
They were his last words ...

Never lose site of your freedom, it is the most precious gift you have been given.
