Day 5
Apparently I was attacked last night.
I didn't sleep well and when I got up I had about 20 huge, inflamed bites (the one on my ankle during the course of the day has grown into a rather nasty blister and is rather sore due to the skin stretching)
We headed off to Etna today via some very "scenic" local "roads".
"Turn here" the sat. nav. would say.
But that is a farm track/someone's drive/way too narrow for the car!
Oh No It Isn't! ……...that really is a "road"!
We stopped for a very pleasant lunch in the main square in Zafferina which was having its siesta apart from the 3 eateries/bars in the square (and even they were almost bereft of customers).
SWMBO described the Sicilian pizzas we had as being like a Calzone made out of unsweetened doughnut mixture. It really was delicious …. and enormous.
We went up Etna to the highest point you can drive to (2000m) but didn't take the cable-car any higher. It was a shade warm for that (over 30C) and I don't think the summit would be visible from the top of the cable-car anyway.
But the fairly recent lava flows are clear to see.
The drive back was another fun challenge with the sat. nav. and the suicidal Italian drivers.
But once again, we survived...…….. just!
I just hope the car hire company isn't one for getting the magnifying glass out on the wheel rims - it was either the wheel rim against the kerb or the motor cyclists head through the windscreen and I know which one I would rather it was.
We are now back at the hotel with the smuggled in bottles of booze.
