Echinos is the Greek word for hedgehog and so appropriate for this spikey flower. My Echinops ritro or globe thistles were planted initially because they were drought resistant!! So, moving swiftly on......

Hunting around the garden for some sign of life this morning I came across this little female hover feeding on what could be the 3rd flush of thistle flowers. Kneeling in the wet flowerbed I was suddenly joined by able assistant coming forward to help with a torch which just did the job lighting up the pinky colours on it's wings! It quite liked being in the spotlight so that was an added bonus - too intent on it's food I think to worry about, 'lights, camera, action'. Just in time too before the wind picked up and a small shower ensued. So glad I had the shot in the can so to speak!
