Remembrance Day
Whether it coincidence or fate, I'll never know but I took a detour today and discovered this rememberance stone. It says
RAF Horne Advanced Landing Ground
Spitfires of the RAF arrived on the airfield to the north of this point on 30 April 1944 and flew on offensive weapons operations until 19 June that year. This plaque commemorates the stay of the 3 squadrons which formed 142Wing and all the airmen who served here including those from Australia, Canada, Poland, New Zealand as well as from the British Isles and elsewhere. Their fighter aircraft were among the first over the beaches on D-Day 6 June 1944. We will continue to remember them.
I know it's not officially Remembrance Day today but it seemed poignant and topical after my visit yesterday to Chartwell.
Those Spitfires would have flown directly over my house - had it been built then and had I been alive.
