Ghost Town
After dropping our friends at Heraklion Airport, Crete at 10.30am, we headed to Kalami Village about five miles on the outskirts of Viannos (GPS: N: 35.14724 E: 25.29540) It's not well publicised as a tourist thing and we were told about it by a local. It's hard to find, too, hence the coordinates!
It was deserted in the mid 1970's to make a dam but the plan was abandoned. Today it's a ghost town although a couple of inhabitants remain. Most of the houses are just abandoned and you can walk in and see things they left behind, like the photo's I saw on a table in one of the houses. A ledger in a factory shows the last entry as 1975. What's very strange is the church in the middle of the town is immaculate but everything else is ramshackle.
The one extra shows a street, and the other a look through the front door of another deserted house. Very Eerie. Some houses are cleaned out, others just left in a state and some locked, sort of mirroring society.
We got back to the apartment just before 3pm (Crete time) for me to watch the England v Panama World Cup Match which England won 6-1! We're through to the knock-out stages....again :)
