A sobering experience
Today we visited the International Bomber Command Centre near Lincoln. It boasts the tallest war memorial in the UK, at 102 feet it is as tall as a Lancaster Bombers wingspan. The hundreds of names listed on the giant metal screens that stand around its base reflect the human loss suffered by the bomber command squadrons during the Second World War. A fraction of the overall death toll.
My blip is the view up inside the monument, the extras better demonstrate how tall it stands. The surrounding area is planted with trees to represent each of the 21 airfields that were within ‘bomber county’ and strewn with bright red poppies.
