South of the River

Tyne, that is. Since I went there on my Hadrian’s Wall bus pass adventure a couple of years ago, I’ve wanted to go back to show Mr PB the delights of South Shields. Today I reprised the visit to Souter Lighthouse and walked back to South Shields through the magnificent grassland that is The Leas. The wild flowers, including numerous Orchids, were splendid, but there were very few insects around. This was the only butterfly we saw, apart from a couple of whites and a very worn Painted Lady. Some good sightings of seabirds - Cormorant, Fulmar, Kittiwakes, Razorbills, a sprinkling of Rock Pipits and lots of Linnets, and for much of the day, some lovely light and lively seas. A good day for using up some of my extras.
