Very small moorhen chick...

...but with very large feet. Seen at the Botanics in the main pond which is a good place to be if you're very small as you can hide in the vegetation. There were at least four very small chicks and three older ones, roughly teenagers I would say. I've heard that the first brood will help bring up the second brood, but I didn't see any evidence of that here: it was the parents who were feeding the little ones, and the teenagers had their own agenda.

Before this we had been to the current exhibition at Inverleith House, "The Lost Words" with words by Robert Macfarlane and paintings by Jackie Morris. I had already seen the lovely book, and the exhibition was more beautiful still. It's on until early September, so catch it when you can.
