Greater Butterfly Orchid. (Platanthera chlorantha)

These attractive orchids grow in Arnside Cemetery. Last Autumn the Cemetery Committee decided that it needed the area of ground where they grew for the expansion of their principal purpose as, unfortunately, more people keep dying.

They found another area which they promised would never be used for graves or ashes burials. A volunteer ( yes you might guess who) got permission to dig up about 14 of the plants and kept them in pots over the winter.

They were planted in the new area a couple of months ago. And guess what, they are doing better than they have ever done before.
