Memorial to Sailors

As a seafaring city it is  entirely appropriate that there should be a memorial dedicated to sailors of the Merchant Navy.  Sad though, that the memorial is little more than the ruins of a  church destroyed during the blitz on the city in 1940.

Even so, it is a prominent landmark in Southampton and dates back to 1320 as one of five churches established in the historic town at the time.

It’s fate however was sealed during the wartime blitz on the city in November 1940 and 17 years later as the church closest to the city docks and the mighty ships of the oceans which sail to and from the port, was appropriately dedicated as a memorial to the sailors who man those ships, now and in the past.
