A flash of Autumn in the suburbs

I'm not sure how I feel about Wimpey estates. I grew up in one and it's a standard existence. It was the baby boom so there were loads of kids around. Enough for 11-a-side sometimes. But, reaching a certain age made the estate seem small, suffocating and grim as a result.

And yet. It seems that housebuilding has regressed since Wimpey ruled the suburban roost. How it could, I don't know. Wimpey's attention to maintaining open green spaces and woodland seems unimaginable in a modern world where more focus is given to making sure each new home has enough space to park two cars than providing patches of beauty in amongst the bricks, windows and tyres.

Today, walking to the bus stop in the set of my suburban youth, the light set the trees on fire. The houses framed this to accentuate the beauty.

Suburbs should maintain a connection with nature like Wimpey estates did. Otherwise, why leave the city to live there in the first place?
