Marvao

Today we drove the very short distance to the nearest village, Portagem. This is where Joaquin brings us in the evenings to find  a meal at one of the local "restaurants" or bars (when we are not eating with our hosts, who are turning out to be cooks of the highest order, J is putting me on a diet when we return to the UK). They are simple affairs, but the food is really good.

A short walk along the River Sever, then a very steep climb up the old medieval cobbled track to Marvao. What a castle, as impregnable as they come, and in amazingly well preserved condition. Modelled by the Hospitalliers on Krak de Chevalliers in Syria. And within the ramparts a well preserved village. A huge cistern (46 m long), with an amazing echo - we sang "Bridge over Troubled Water" (there was no one else around), which was pretty interesting.

If this was elsewhere you would not be able to move for the crowds of tourists. They (and we are also they) are here, but in relatively small numbers. So a few interesting shops, and a hotel/ restaurant, and the bar O Castello where we enjoy a cooling drink - and that is it.

J is very nervous about walking the battlements. So in truth am I. Concentration is required. There are no safety railings. In places a mis-step would mean a 40 foot fall onto a very hard surface. Not one for vertigo sufferers., or excitable children. Although the Portuguese view of health and safety may be different to ours.

Blue Rock Thrushes seemed to be everywhere - and Gryphon Vultures drifting overhead.

Quite a route down, lots of floral colour and birdsong. It is becoming the norm.
