Wild Things

Segovia is only a small town, although it holds a very special place in Spanish history which the locals are clearly proud of. And it is stunning.

Today we walked beyond the old city walls and took some of the many paths which pass through the river valleys and woods which surround the old town. You do not have to walk far to "do wild".

The bird life here is not typical of what you expect to see in a town - nightingales, serins, crag martins, black redstarts, choughs, griffon vultures, short toed eagles (which means there must be plenty of snakes), red and black kites ...... as well as those species familiar in the U.K (but loads more swifts).
Oh, and at night what we always call the squeaky gate bird - the repeated calling of scops owls, one of the sounds of Southern Europe.

I liked the poppies lining the paths. My phone camera can cope with those :)
