The Ponsonby peace mural
Some may remember that I did post part of the mural in April 2011.
Today, I have chosen this photograph of the first two panels of the 2009 extension.
VAANA (Visual Artists Against Nuclear Arms) was formed in 1984 to raise public awareness about the continuing risks from nuclear weapons, and to support fellow peace groups through their art. The original mural consisted of works by eight prominent artists, and was erected in 1985. In 1986 a further eight panels were added with the final two coming in 1995.
By 2004, the paintings had deteriorated badly, and in 2006 were replaced by digital reconstructions, the originals being cut into pieces under the supervision of the artists and auctioned with the proceeds going to support anti war activities. Also in 2006, additional paintings were added.
These two panels are the first in the third VAANA mural which was unveiled in March 2009.
Worth a look in large
