Finger Post

A grey day with a cold northerly wind which, according to the Met Office left it feeling around 4 degrees - a bit chilly when just over a week ago it was 28 degrees.  

The bunting here is to celebrate our local artist's studio open day - in this case a potter who lives in the village.  It was certainly a welcome bit of cheer on such a miserable weather day.  The sign post to which the bunting is attached in one of several similar finger posts around the village.  They are 'historical' posts and so are no longer maintained by our council.  However, there has recently been an plea by our local community to encourage villagers to informally adopt a sign by keeping it clean and reporting to the Parish Council if they feel it is in need of more serious repair.  I love the signs for the character they bring and because some mark places which no longer exist or use hold place names. The historical reason for the posts dates from 1697 when legislation was passed requiring guide posts to be placed at each crossroads.  Different versions of the posts are found all over England but they vary across and within regions.
