Man at Edge
Walked from Kirkland to see the Roman road ‘Maiden’s Way’ that links Kirkby Thore with Carvoran on Hadrian’s Wall. I was persuading myself I was looking at banks and ditches. It wasn’t well waymarked so I kept going astray. I optimistically hoped I’d see boundary stones with things like ‘Rome 1,440 miles ->’ and ‘veni vidi vici’ to guide me. I didn’t see a soul, it was very evocative. Curlews, swathes of windflowers and I’m sure I saw a ring ouzel.
I can’t find any explanation why this spot is called ‘Man at Edge’ but there was a quarry up here and you can still see the iron tracklines that took limestone down to the kiln In the valley bottom.
Extra - not sure what this was about. Anyone got any ideas? They were in a cage in the middle of a field.
