Mini and Mini-Me
These two BMW Mini models are five years apart but this side-by-side juxtaposition demonstrates the way the latest model vehicles have swollen.
I believe it's all to do with the introduction of new European safety standards for passenger cars.
It's good that people will be safer in their vehicles but there are issues. Will they drive faster because they feel safer? If so the effects may be negated and other road users will potentially suffer the consequences. If the increased size and sturdiness of new vehicles increases their weight, it also has consequences for fuel consumption, exhaust emissions (greenhouse gases, nitrogen oxides and carcinogens) and climate change.
Please drive carefully, even if you're better protected in the latest marques. Remember we're still on the Mark I Pedestrian and the Mark Ia Cyclist :)
