Atlantic Beach, North Carolina

Today we visited another state park, Fort Macon State Park on Atlantic Beach.  We walked the 3.5 mile loop that began at the fort, meandered by the coast guard station (where a brand new cutter was being commissioned), through the woods, across the road to the beach, along the pristine beach to the inlet and back to the fort.  The fort was built in the 1860s by the union army and remained in use through WWII.

This is the first location in the state to become an official state park.  The extra is a view from inside the fort.

Afterwards, we enjoyed a fine lunch at Shark Shack.
