Trams

Like Edinburgh, Milan has trams. Unlike Edinburgh, Milan's trams are an integral part of its transport system. For €4.50, you can travel by bus, tram or metro as much as you like over a 24 hour period. You have to validate your ticket at the start of your 24 hours on a tram, a bus or at a metro station. After that you don't need to show it on a bus or tram, but it will be checked by machine every time you go in or out of a metro station. We didn't see any tram conductors or inspectors checking tickets.
The trams travel all over the city and out into the suburbs. They run happily along narrow, cobbled streets mixing with other vehicles. They run in some cases every 5 minutes and in others less frequently.
Milan is full of cyclists, there is a city cycle scheme where you can pick up a bike from a track and return it to another rack elsewhere. I didn't see any cyclists having problems with the cobbles or tram lines and there were areas of dedicated cycle lanes too.
Best of all, many of the trams date from the 1930's, are made of wood with wooden bench seats, very high entry steps and glass lamp shades, see extra. I guess they are not very user friendly if you have a disability, but we saw plenty of buggies being lifted off and on. There are also some more modern trams with flatter entry points on some of the routes.

What fun.
