The Old Forge (Friday 6th April 2018)

A busy Gardening Friday this morning with Refna. I was drilling drainage holes in the bottom of the oak barrels I bought recently. Three are to use for shrubs and patio trees and one to house the RSPB bird feeder pole which is being moved from the front yard tin drum to the back garden, which seems to be favoured by the birds.
When I turned the barrels over I was pleased to find they are genuine twentieth century whisky barrels from the Invergordon Distillery, and drilling the holes released the sweet scent of oak and whisky.

Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Miles Davis - Milestones (recorded 4 February 1958, New York NY)
Miles Davis (trumpet), John Coltrane (tenor sax), Cannonball Adderley (alto sax), Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (stand-up bass), Philly Joe Jones (drums, percussion)
I paricularly love the drum patterns on this. It came up on Stuart Maconie's show this afternoon but I wasn't able to hear it properly, so went to play my own copy later, only to discover to my shame that I didn't have one (a situation that is shortly to be remedied).
It is the first example of Miles Davis composing in a modal style. The experimentation in this piece led to the composition So What on Kind Of Blue in 1959.
It came from the album Milestones  but on its original mono vinyl release was known simply as Miles, though it became the title track on subsequent editions as it had become popularly known by that name.  The whole album was mixed into true stereo for re-release in 2009. This is the stereo version.
