Vermiculate Rustication

Rustication is an architectural term referring to a decorative treatment of the masonry of a structure's exterior. It is intended to give the impression of a simple primitive appearance while actually being the product of skilled and sophisticated craftsmen.
Rustication is usually confined to the ground floor of imposing buildings to emphasise the anchoring of the building and to contrast with higher floors.
Vermiculate (worm like) patterns are picked into the surface of the stone blocks. A time consuming process requiring skilled masons and very costly.
Highly popular in the 17th and 18th centuries.
A kind of Georgian Artex.
