Flushed with Success

This morning we visited a café / bar which has re-opened under new ownership at the Old Axminster Courthouse. They have refurbished the building beautifully, and made seating areas in the two old prison cells  and the sergeant's living quarters.
These old flush toilet cisterns are situated on the outside of the cells, so that prisoners couldn't use them as a means of hanging themselves. The actual toilets were inside the cells. A boiler was installed (in 1900 I think) so that hot air could be pumped into the cells to keep the prisoners warm. Not so for the sergeant and his family - they just had a small fireplace.
