The Corinth Canal
This canal, dug from solid rock in the late 1800's, means that ships can avoid the long haul round the southern part of Greece, connecting as it does the Adriatic with the Agean, just 30 odd kms south of Athens and its port Piraeus.
6.3 kms long, a spectacular 79 metres deep, it has 12,500 transits a year and can take vessels up to 1o,ooo tons.
Here endeth the tourist guide bit, but I must say that it is quite spectacular from above, with its very steep, slightly crumbly sides and bright blue-green water, glad we made the trip to see it.
