The dropped stitch

Sanday

I had thought it was going to be a day off, but then got a call to go to Sanday.
Luckily I managed to book on the ferry, and once on board I discovered it was THE day to go to Sanday.  Nearly everyone else was going to see the walrus. Opinions and information were being excitedly exchanged: where was the last sighting? At what time? Would it leave with the high tide? One passenger had similarly rushed to North Ronaldsay the last time a walrus made an appearance, but had not been in time to see it. Was the same going to happen this time?

There was a buzz all over the island. Asking for directions the most repeated response was -well, usually they'd be in - but today they are probably out looking at the walrus.

Jobs completed, and back on the evening ferry, I was again on the fringes of the historic event as everyone in the passenger lounge watched the TV news for the mention of Sanday. And we knew it was coming because sitting with us was the man from Radio Orkney who had filed the report!

A memorable day and it was sunny and calm too! A perfect day for a passing walrus to pull up and take a rest on the beach.
