Update for previous night: Driver picked us up as arranged @ 15:00 hrs, the negotiated, extended chuck out time at the hotel, and drove us about Kochi & Ernakulam just to waste time. We could have held on to him for a few hours more, but as he was driving home to Madurai, a long way away, we let him go around 16:30 and ensconced ourselves in the 2nd Class non A/C waiting room where we say, perspiring, for a couple of hours.
On enquiring, I established that our train, the Nizamuddin Express was due to depart Ernakulam variously @ 18:50, 18:55 and 19:00. However, an electronic tracking machine told me that the train was in fact running 35 minutes late. No it wasn't. It pulled in at 18:40, and as another device, a hand written marker board, had told me our carriage, A2, would be at stance No. 4 on platform1, we went to it Well, it got the platform right, but our A2 coach was at the other end, and it's a flipping long train.
Off we rushed, scattering hingersaboot, and made it to the front by the proverbial skin of our teeth.
Berths located, we sat down, cooled down, and sighed as the train pulled out at, precisely, 19:00 hrs.
Supper was a very tasty veg curry w/ Chapatis, 3 in fact, purchased from a stall in the station, for all of 62 Inr, including the plastic spoons.
Now trundling through the dark (outside), waiting for our as yet unknown fellow travellers to join us in our multi bunk compartment. What a way to have to meet new folk, eh? Then I suppose the carriage attendant will come and show us how to convert the seats to bunks. Clean bedding awaits.
Further update: Train arrived 1 minute early @ 08:09. Instant taxi to resort. Room fine and we have settled in, revisiting Coco's - much changed in 2 years - and expolring the back paths & lanes. Goan food is different, and great. Stronger spices it appears.
Extras: Local water buffalo, and view from our balcony..
