Victoria Baths

I was back at the baths today cleaning - but not just general cleaning - after reading through several pages of what you can do, and what you can't do, when cleaning historic glass, I was given permission to clean the stained glass windows.  It is quite simple really, but it takes a bit of practice to develop a workable technique - cotton wool balls wrapped around a suitable piece of wood, and soaked in distilled water.  But you can't rub the glass though; you have to roll the cotton wool gently over the glass, and it is tricky to get the cotton wool to just the right amount of sogginess.

The main blip is the rather clean and uncluttered 2nd class male pool, which is always floored over these days so that it can be used for events.  The interesting aspect to this is that when the baths originally opened it was far too cold in the winter for bathing in the pools, so the main pool (the 1st class males pool) was floored over in the winter and used as a dance hall.  So flooring over the pools is not something new.

The extras are my cleaning kit in the shop and the 'feature' window which is the only external window in the shop.  I didn't do the outside of the feature window (the windows are all protected on the outside) and I am not qualified to do anything with painted glass, i.e. the centre piece of the feature window with the runners.

Cleaning the glass, with music from my iPod, turned out to be rather therapeutic.  I'd certainly do that job again.
