Under Threat
With continued cuts in central Government funding to local authorities, Somerset County Council is looking for ways to save money and one of their proposals is to either close some local libraries or replace professionally trained staff with volunteers.
Our library is one of those threatened with closure, despite the fact that it has the largest footfall of those on our area, serves the village with the largest population and, apart from its lending facility and free us of IT, runs a whole range of community activities including the Wednesday Rhyme Time we go to with Sophie, Poetry Clubs and regular visits from writers, etc.
It seems unlikely that this Government is going to change its policy, which enables it to blame cuts on someone else, but we're hoping that if enough people express their objection to the plans, the Council will find other ways to make savings without having a detrimental effect on what is an essential community facility.
Took this on the way back from the dentist's, where I had the pleasure of a filling; mouth still numb as I type!
No golf today. We thought the course would be closed again, as it was yesterday, after furthe heavy rain yesterday and by the time we found out it was open it was too late for us to get there for our start time.
On the positive side, Tess & I picked up our tickets for our next trip in April.
