Redcurrants for the Rumtopf

I came across a redcurrant bush at a field entrance near Airlie in Angus. I had some plastic tubs in the car boot so I picked what I could off that bush then crossed over the road as it looked like there might be another one there - and there was! This time my Mum came with me to help. I was ready to quit long before her - she kept seeing more strands and was delving in to get them. During this we also spotted some gooseberries here. They were small but - oh my goodness - so very sweet! The sweetest I have ever tasted. They were amazing. I tried a redcurrant but they were quite tart. No matter though for I was picking them for Neil and I's Rumtopf (a stone pot for preserving layers of fruit by covering them with rum and sugar and leaving them for months) so they are going to go in there on top of the strawberries, gooseberries, blackcurrants and raspberries that are already in the pot. They will get a pile of sugar dumped on them, then drowned with dark rum and left till Christmas! I got the Rumtopf for a wedding present back in 1993 (I had asked for it on my wedding list!) but had never used it until now. Neil likes making jams and chutneys so I thought he might like the idea of the Rumtopf and so here it is getting used at long last. He also forages a lot too so I reckoned he would be very proud of me acquiring these redcurrants! While we were picking them my Mum said to me "You must have a bit of your Granny in you, doing this". Turns out she liked foraging too. Though I can remember foraging for brambles with my Mum when I girl so I don't think it has skipped a generation! However, I didn't let my Mum know that this is the first time I have ever foraged like this as an adult!
