On the ward

The Knights Hospitaller - or Knights of St. John - are central to the history of Malta. Their Sacra Infermeria was founded there in 1574 and functioned as a hospital until 1918. The wealthy were treated in the "Great Ward" at street level. This was the ward for poorer patients, underground.
