Clinker Community
There are a couple of spots on the moor where coal waste that has been fused through burning has been left in mounds or boulders. This is a legacy of the larger deep pit operations that stopped more than a hundred years ago, rather than the many small bell-pits. While much of the clinker material remains exposed, it is gradually being colonised by new ecological communities.
On top of one of the boulders, I spotted this mushroom. It's about the size of my thumbnail, but it drew the eye, set against the lush green moss and the crumbling clinker. Try viewing large.
