Birds?

I had to take my car into Timaru this afternoon for a service.  On my way in I noticed this paddock.  It appeared to have unidentified birds in it feeding on the crop.

On my way home 3 hours later I pulled over and realised that what I'd thought were birds were actually dead dock plants; and what I'd thought was a crop had been, but was no longer!
