I was told that this was a swan but it has now been suggested that it's a cormorant, so I've deleted the previous write up and here is another.... Cormorants are a symbol of nobility and indulgence. Once exploited for their fishing skills in China and Japan, a snare was tied to their throats so that they could not swallow any fish they had caught. The fishermen would them remove the fish from the bird ! Thankfully no longer practised
