Glimpses of Blackheath 17
Last time we wandered around Blackheath, we were actually standing HERE. As indicated previously this level crossing is pretty central to the town and lots of high visibility things are to be found nearby.
Let's take our eyes away from that hypnotic red flashing light, turn left (i.e. south), walk twelve paces and turn right (i.e. west) again. Voila. This is actually a "brand new" glimpse, given that it arrived this very morning. Admittedly, there had been an old Rhododendron Festival sign which had been sitting there for a quarter century or so. It was replaced with this new one today.
If you look carefully down left you may just be able to see through the vegetation that clings to the chicken wire fence behind the sign. You might just be able to make out the railway line which one can ultimately see passing through the crossing, those few metres to the right, just out of shot.
Why am I so interested in the sign? Well I created the design, the rhododendron photo and the pre-press art. In a way, it's my sign. Over many years I produced lots of display ads, page designs, book layouts, pamphlet art and book covers .... but only occasionally did I do a billboard/advertising hoarding. It's a little thing but it sort of amounts to a tiny piece of immortality I guess.
