Woolly Mamooth Spider or Sabre Toothed Spider

Scuttled this fearsome beastie from neath a rock at the side of the herbacious border.

It was fast and darting and I just managed to catch a quick pic as it shot into the grass underneath the hedge.

From what I can see it was wearing a woolly cardigan, now whether that was natural or the result of some arachnophile crotcheting I can't answer. If the carapace was not woolly then the only description That makes sense is a back covered with tiny limpets.

I did wonder if they may be some kind of egg cells so that she can carry her babies about much in the fashion of the ladies from sudan who shop in banyoles with three or four tiny heads peeking from the folds of their robes.

If anyone can help to identify this breed then I would be grateful, all I can say is that like all spiders it is descended from a dinosaur in this case a woolly mammoth, I fear.


When in years to come, in line with genetic inevitability, they reach the size of their ancestors then I will be forced to dig a deep pit lined with sharpened staves before I venture to weed the teclium or prune back the cotoneaster.
