Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Budapest: Day 7.

Our Last full day in Budapest. This morning we girded our loins for the steep climb up the Gellert Hill to see the old citadel. The views were magnificent, but the citadel was closed.
From what I have read the citadel was originally built between 1850 and 1854 by the Habsburgs, showing their power and might to the Hungarians, whom they just defeated during their 1848-1849 revolution.
In more recent times it provided shelter for the Nazis when the Soviets laid siege to Budapest in 1945. The photograph shows how the walls are still peppered with damage from the Russian artillery.
