prelude to lesson 1

I have my first guitar lesson tonight.  While this old LP serves as motivation, I have to temper any enthusiasm with a healthy dose of realism.  And yesterday, a prelude to this first lesson had me, in the words of Evelyn Waugh, “sliding back down the slope of self-confidence”.

I showed my new guitar to my friend and bandmate Neil.  I had no idea he too was a Charlie Byrd fan.  Or that he had this particular album.  He demonstrates this with an impromptu recital starting with ‘Prelude’, followed by ‘And then my heart stood still’ before finishing with ‘My funny valentine’ - which by amazing coincidence, just happen to be on my list of pieces to learn.

He plays beautifully but rather than feeling envy, I just sit back and listen with a big smile on my face.

Oh well - one day perhaps.
