Mamatung
It’s been a while since I blipped my pal, and former colleague, Jodie (centre) and her bandmates in Mamatung https://www.blipfoto.com/entry/2221711485350971014 and a lot has happened since then...
Our funding problems at work meant we had to say goodbye to Jodie at the end of March, which was horrible. But she’s never been one to let the grass grow under her feet... unless she’s doing it in a mindful manner!
She, Emma (left) and Becky (right) moved out of the house they all shared - after a spectacular clearance sale at which they sold almost all their possessions (not their instruments, of course!). They used the proceeds to buy a car and caravan and they set off to France, from where they commenced to play their way around Europe.
They got back to Liverpool a week or so ago in time to play a gig at the Philharmonic Music Room tonight, on a bill of women musicians, as part of Liverpool Irish Festival.
The other acts were all great; Emma Lusby in a folky way, Sue Rynhart in a jazzy way, and Ailbhe Reddy in an indie-folk way. But, leaving all subjectivity aside, I reckon Mamatung were the stars of the night!
Their brand of cosmic freak-folk seemed to captivate the audience and they received a gratifyingly rousing reception from the gathered throng.
Here they are with some ‘Wailing’ www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrwZF2FzMPg
I’m looking forward to a proper catch-up with Jodie next week and can’t wait to hear about her continental wanderings!
(The Extra Photo is of Ailbhe Reddy, whose beautiful guitar I fell deeply in love with - if anyone wants to know what I’d like for Christmas, haha!)
