Day 11
The group split up today as we chose to do different optional activities. I chose with 5 others to be boated across the lake to visit a small community descended from the pygmies. The hills rising from the water were steep but not an inch was wasted and square after square of the land was worked and planted all by hand. We were welcomed by a band of children who grabbed our hands and led us to the village where they danced whilst the elders sang a welcome song beautifully. The poverty though was shocking and it brought a lump to my throat to see little children barefoot and in rags. Saying that, they were happy little souls and had broad smiles on their faces most of the time.
