Emergency vet visit

I let Buddy off the lead on his morning walk as I needed to go out for a few hours and wanted to tire him out nicely beforehand so he would sleep well and not feel too lonely. Unfortunately things didn't go to plan. A group of smoking school pupils had placed their bag of five massive and very chocolatey cookies on a nearby bench, where they were subsequently sniffed out and gleefully snatched by Buddy - after which was no way he was going to relinquish until he'd got the packet open and one of them in his mouth. At this point I was able to retrieve the remaining four, which went straight in the bin, and I reimbursed the youngsters for their loss. However, chocolate is poisonous to dogs and potentially very dangerous. So I called the vet for advice, and as there was no accurate way of knowing how much actual chocolate Buddy had ingested, an injection to induce vomiting was the strong recommendation. This seemed the right thing to do rather than hope that the amount of chocolate consumed had been relatively small and any symptoms would be mild and over quickly. £148 later, I had Buddy back at home seemingly in good shape (unlike my wallet) and I know it was the right thing to do. At the weekend I will be attempting to negotiate the pet insurance claim form in the hope of getting a fair proportion of the fee back!
