The turning area for ships of this size at Southampton’s deep water container terminal is pretty tight but the workhorse tugs are well used to manoeuvring big ships in and out of the port and in particular the container terminal.
We caught one of the newest generation of container ships, the 185,503 deadweight tons MSC Anna leaving the terminal, heading for Bremerhaven before making her voyage back to the Far East.
At 1,312 feet long she is the equivalent of nearly 50 double deck buses standing end to end, and 192 feet wide is one of the largest container ships operating between the Far East and Europe. And one of the newest, built last year at the South Korean shipyards of Hyundai Heavy Industries. She carries a Liberian flag and is registered at Monrovia as her home port, although operated by the Swiss-based Mediterranean Shipping Company on Maersk Line routes.
Her stay in Southampton was a little less than 24 hours, having arrived yesterday from Rotterdam.
She’s not fully laden for her voyage tonight, but when fully laden has the capacity to carry the equivalent of 19,200 containers of 20ft.
