Under the carpet . . . !

I should explain that this is the carpet covering the compost bins - not inside the house!  My housekeeping isn't that poor!

Not a bad day so I turned the compost bins over while Mike was out on Peridot.  He put her back to the mooring at the head of the bay, where she will be a bit more sheltered in the wild weather.

Turning and aerating the compost bins is hard physical work, but very rewarding and heartening to see so many worms in evidence.  As we harvest the veg from the beds in the back garden, I will be putting the most well rotted down bin's worth onto them over the winter.    We'll have to use the leeks soon as they are starting to bolt.

The hens weren't happy while we were away.  It happens quite often when someone else looks after them.  They stop laying and start moulting/fighting/getting ill/go broody.   I think it's the human contact they miss - I tend to spend time with them rather than feed and go.  Today I let them out while I cut the grass and weeded and they had a good scratch about and dust bath. Hopefully this will jolt them into starting to lay again!
