Grotto

Didn't plan a bike ride as the forecast said it was going to be pouring down. Fortunately it goes off pretty early. I go out for a short pre lunch walk, its quite nice.

After lunch, I get the bus to Colinton. I walk through the tunnel to the main path, then down to the waterside path. There are lovely views of the river, weirs and bridges. Loads of photos, but I only have 21 Extra photos remaining.

Tucked away as I turn a corner is this old grotto. It is one of several grottos built in the 18th Century so that visitors to Alexander Munro's Craiglockhart Estate could rest as they walked through the estate. The grotto was once lined inside with shells, but they have gone.

Behind this grotto is a gorge that was the divide between the Craiglockhart Estate and the Redhall Estate.

The grotto is near the end of the walk.A few more metres, the sound of traffic returns, a siren of an emergency vehicle breaks what silence is left. Back to the city.
