Malham

We were back orienteering in the Dales today, just a bit further along the moor from Attermire yesterday, so still in limestone country with plenty of pavement to negotiate.

We began the day doing a stint in the SI tent.  When folks register for a course their details, including their SI number, are inputted in to the computer against their chosen course.  This means that when they finish, they receive a print out detailing their split times to each control, their overall finish time and position.

When our shift was over, we changed in to our orienteering gear and walked the 900m to the start on the fell side, and then we were off.  I don't always get my head in to gear straight away and today I almost went from no.2 to no.4 without visiting no.3!  Thankfully, whilst working out where some small ponds were on the map, I spotted my error and was able to divert to the control.

The rest of the course went quite smoothly and I paused to take out the small camera to capture the view across to Malham Tarn.  Once finished I picked up my DSLR and went back out on to the competition area to blip some orienteers coming through.  There weren't many still to finish at this stage in the day so I re-sorted my camera settings and took this solitary tree on the limestone pavement, typical Dales view.

We called in for tea and cake at the farm shop to discover that the BBC film crew are still there - this week it is condiments, chutneys etc!   Looking at the welsh rarebit being enjoyed on the next table, we have decided to eat there tomorrow after we have finished bringing in the stiles.  I might pick up some chutney too!
