"Bivouac of the Dead"

"The muffled drum's sad roll has beat
The soldier's last tattoo;
No more on life's parade shall meet
That brave and fallen few. 
On Fame's eternal camping-ground
Their silent tents are spread,
And Glory guards, with solemn round,
The bivouac of the dead."

This poem was written by Theodore O'Hara to honor his fellow soldiers from Kentucky who died in the Mexican-American war. The poem became very popular following the Civil War, and its verses have been used on many memorials to fallen soldiers, including Woods National Cemetery here in Milwaukee, which is where I first read it many years ago; the poem has many verses, but I like this first one the best.

Day 7 of chemo given before Tom was discharged from the hospital this evening. Echocardiogram was good, so no heart problems. :)
