City Heritage

Another part of Southampton’s heritage, the ancient Castle Watergate situated in part of the old city walls stil remaining.
A plaque alongside the gateway explains it was built in medieval times to provide access from the city’s castle to a private quay on what was then a private quay belonging to the king.
History recalls that in the 12th and 13th centuries the port even then was prosperous, primarily exporting wool and importing wine.
 
Althogh the gateway has long been blocked off there is still evidence of the portcullis and wooden doors which controlled access in ancient times.  The gateway was partially restored in the late 19th century, and today it is another part of the city’s heritage within a few yards of the city’s new restaurant quarter.
