Walking the Line 6
God's Gate (and, Unconformity)
This is what I've always known as God's Gate.
It has a cracking view across Dunnabeck to Rydal and Wansfell above Ambleside in the distance (see extra). This was our 'back garden' and G and I would meander the paths up here and maintain the fell drains. It doesn't look as though anyone does this any more.
It is one of the many 'Thirlmere gates' that follow the line of the acquaduct from Thirlmere to Manchester which lies many feet below.
'Unconformity' because geologically it doesn't fit with native gates of this area of volcanic rock. These all have sandstone stoops and black metal bars and all are padlocked shut.
I clambered over 3 of these as I walked up to Alcock Tarn today - it was a lovely respite in between showers which hammered down again as I got back to the car. It doesn't look as though anyone walks these 'off piste' paths now; history and memory reclaimed by head high bracken.
