Autumn

It's September so according to meteorologists it's Autumn ... and by the feel of the weather they're right.  Astronomical Autumn starts on 22 September with the  Autumn equinox.  

For me Autumn starts with the first Autumn flowering crocus - and here it is, Crocus serotinus, one of several autumn flowering bulbs known to the Spanish shepherds as espantapastores, the terror of the shepherds, flowering as the Autumn storms disturb the peace of summer pasture.

This species deserves to be more widely grown as it is very tolerant of garden conditions - if you can provide a warm, well drained spot.
