Calanais - The Standing Stones

Backblip

Our next port of call was Stornoway in the Isle of Lewis. We had a lovely sail in with a beautiful sunrise and a pod of whales passing by. We could see the spouts and the occasional whale back breaking the surface (too far away to see clearly in a photo).

Our tour was to the Callanish (or Calanais) Standing Stones - amazing to think that they were erected between 2600 and 2900 BC and their circular ditched enclosure was there over 2000 years earlier. For some reason I always like to touch the standing stones and not just look at them. We also went to the Arnol Blackhouse which is a reconstructed blackhouse - and very smoky with its peat fire and no chimney! I've added a postcard with more photos in Extras. We also had a quick look round the shops before getting the tender back to the ship, lovely to see all the Harris tweed.
