Jackpot!
Absolutely thrilled to find this beauty today. Its the Small Pearl Bordered Fritillary. Regarded as the rarest woodland butterfly in Sussex, I haven't seen one for more than six years and it was believed to have been lost entirely from the south-east. It appears that the Fritilaries for the Future Project, which aims to restore a healthy population to Sussex woodlands, is starting to have some success. I've now reached 36 species for the year and still hope to get the silver studded skipper (tomorrow's target) and the brown haristreak.
